History of the ripalda passage
At the end of the 19th century, the valencian high bourgeoisie, wishes to transfer to our city the customs and architectural style of Italian cities. Moved by this current, the Countess of Ripalda, Mrs.. Maria Josefa Paulín de la Peña, commissioned in 1889 to the architect Joaquín Arnau Miramón the construction of the Ripalda Passage; who built an architectural complex of clear neoclassical style surprising the Valencians by the imposing arches of its entrances, that welcomed passersby into its interior decorated with harmonious lintels and corbels, all under its skylights that filled the passage with light.
The Ripalda Passage, It was the first covered commercial passage that was built in the Valencian capital, housing for years the Gran Hotel Ripalda that remained open until the early forties, after closing, it was restructured, becoming commercial premises and homes. It was precisely in this Hotel where he settled in 1897, according to some historians, the first elevator in town.
Today its fifty meters in length continue to attract the attention of its walkers due to the beauty of its interior.. The gallery covered by iron and glass, it houses a perpendicular corridor in the middle of the passage that joins the two rigging at the height of the first floor, also attracts attention, at the height of the mezzanine, the lintel windows on one side and the mid-to-point ones on the other. Also highlight a small and curious mosaic with the name of the passage and the drawing of the Palace of the Countess of Ripalda that gives it its name on the access door of Calle de San Vicente.
